Our Story
Hi, folks! Welcome to Spearfish Clayworks, a community pottery studio where we aim to provide an environment where creativity can thrive, no matter someone's experience level. The studio is woman-owned, operated by Emily and a team of Spearfish locals dedicated to fostering a positive and inclusive space.
In 2005, when Emily was in high school, she landed her first job as a studio assistant to the late Shawn Funk, who was a beloved potter, musician, & community arts educator. After his passing, Emily graduated high school and moved on from Spearfish, but throughout the years of adventuring and learning to become an educator herself, two things really stuck: pottery and music.
Twenty years later, Emily opened her own brick-and-mortar pottery studio. She feels it an honor and a privilege to bring it full circle, offering a ceramics space to Spearfish, with an emphasis on classes and community. Members may be subject to the occasional band practice during open studio!
